Panels for glass stairs can provide a wonderfully light and contemporary feel to any home.
Fitting glass panels for stairs can be a daunting task. There is a common misconception that they are easily broken or fragile. This is simply not the case and fitting glass panels is actually relatively easy.
Cheshire Mouldings has two glass panel ranges both are easy to fit
The Clarity range has been designed not only for its quality and style but also for its strength and simplicity to install as a brand new staircase or to fit to your existing handrail and base rail.
Please note that the angle of your staircase can be between 40°-45°
How then do you fit these glass panels for stairs? Here are a set of instructions for installing the glass panels in order to break it down, step-by-step.
Assembly of a glass panel, or the whole series of glass panels within a staircase, is remarkably simple. The first thing to do is to make sure that your handrail and baserail are measured to length. Fit the baserail in place, but do not seal the handrail yet. It will be needed to secure the glass in place.
Take one of the glass panels, ensuring that the rubber gasket is in place, secured at the bottom of the panel. This will provide it with added stability. Ensure that the hole in the gasket is in line with the one at the end of the glass.
Using the fixings provided with the Reflection panels, take the other half of the bracket and temporarily secure it in place on the opposite side of the glass panel. This may need a bit of wiggle room later so do not tighten it up yet.
Repeat the above process for another glass panel to ensure a balanced approach when securing the handrail later.
The first glass panel should be positioned vertically, no more than 99mm from the narrowest part of the newel post turning. This applies to the first glass panel from either end of the staircase. Use this spacing to temporarily secure both glass panels in place.
This will mark the height the handrail will need to be and should be marked on the newel posts. Use this mark to fit our universal handrail to newel post fixing kit.
If you are not confident on how to do this then please consult a trade professional for guidance.
Once the handrail has been measured the next step is to secure the top and bottom glass panels no further than 99mm away from the newel posts. Secure the handrail in place on top of the glass panels and secure the glass to it.
It can be tricky to get even spacing between glass panels. In order to evenly space the rest measure the midpoint between the two fixed panels. Divide this number by 385 and round up to the nearest whole number. Divide the original measurement by the whole number. This will give you the exact centre spacing measurement.
Always make sure the centre measurement is no more than 385mm. If it is then you will want to check your calculations in order to make sure that they are correct.
Install the fillets in between each glass bracket as you proceed. Use panel pins or a propriety wood glue to secure each fillet in place, making sure you have measured the spacing between each bracket carefully.
